Junior League of Sioux Falls Tackles Childhood Healthy Living

May 1, 2012 — The Junior League of Sioux Falls (JLSF), a women’s volunteer organization that empowers women to be a driving force to improve the Sioux Falls community, is partnering with Hawthorne Elementary to promote healthy eating habits and lifestyle choices.

Together, they are planning a school-wide event for children and their families. Children will have the opportunity to learn about healthy eating and lifestyles through fun activities, including making healthy snacks and being portion conscious.

Hawthorne Elementary received a grant from the S.D. Department of Education. Funds will be used to provide a sampling of a variety of fruits and vegetables and information related to nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices. All Hawthorne families are encouraged to attend.

More than 300 children and adults are expected at the Thursday, May 3, event located at Hawthorne Elementary (601 N Spring Ave.) from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The partnership of the Junior League of Sioux Falls is a part of Association of Junior Leagues International’s Kids in the Kitchen Initiative. Since the program’s inception in 2006, thousands of kids nationally and hundreds locally have participated in hands-on activities to fight the spread of childhood obesity and achieve healthy lifestyles.

Mentors Announced for New YWCA Program

April 6, 2012 — Two dozen professional women have been accepted as mentors for the first YWCA Women’s Leadership Program that began January 13, 2012. The Women’s Leadership Program is a service project of the Junior League of Sioux Falls.

“We just completed a very hard process for matching participants and mentors for the first Women’s Leadership Program,” said Erin Bosch, the Y’s director of women’s leadership. “We had so many outstanding women apply.”

The year-long program aims to use the personal experiences and skills of volunteer mentors to inspire and educate proteges as they create personal development plans.

Sold Out! Pumps, Pearls, Purses in Boogie Wonderland

The Junior League of Sioux Falls, a women’s volunteer organization that empowers women to be a driving force to improve the Sioux Falls community, announces its annual fundraiser "Pumps, Pearls, Purses in Boogie Wonderland" will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, at Callaway's Event Center (500 E 69th St.). Tickets to the event were sold out in February and were $35, available from JJ's Wine & Spirits (57th and Western) and Jenny Craig (3109 W 41st St.). The funds support the local mission of the Junior League of Sioux Falls (JLSF).

Now in its sixth year, this 'girls-only' fundraiser changes a little every year, but a few things stay constant ... unique menus, fun games, a fabulous silent auction and abundant shopping. The following 13 vendors are providing booths:

YWCA Announces Prot�g�s for Women's Leadership Program

December 16, 2011 — The YWCA Sioux Falls has accepted 24 women as participants (protégés) in the first Women’s Leadership Program to begin January 13, 2012. The Women’s Leadership Program is a service project of the Junior League of Sioux Falls.

Erin Bosch, Director of Women’s Leadership said, “Today, we are pleased to announce the selection of the protégés for the YWCA Women’s Leadership Program. In our first year, 50 outstanding women applied to participate in the program. We are overwhelmed with the diversity and wide range of skills that these women bring to the program. This program is an opportunity for personal, professional and community development and will result in a balanced, healthier Sioux Falls community.”

The focus of the Women’s Leadership Program is to use the personal experiences and skills of volunteer mentors to educate and inspire the protégés. During a two-day retreat and five training sessions, the participants (protégés) will develop an individual success plan that includes personal and professional goals and ways to achieve them. In February, a mentor will be matched with the participant (protégé) to support and guide her through the implementation of her plan during the next year.

To assist young women as they pursue their higher education, the League awards a Memorial & Tribute Scholarship in the amount of $500 annually. The League year jumps into action beginning September 16 at the General Membership Meeting. Monthly membership meetings are typically held the third Thursday of the month, 7:00 p.m., through May. See calendar for details.

Awards

Since the 1950s, The Association of Junior Leagues International has received honors on behalf of member Junior Leagues. In 2008, The Association of Junior Leagues International won the Award of Excellence in the 2008 Associations Advance America Awards program, a national competition sponsored by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) & The Center for Leadership, Washington, D.C. for its Kids in the Kitchen program.
